My name is Mark Anderson. I’m a videographer and designer based in the Bay Area. Aethervision is a channel for my personal work in design and video, a balance to the corporate work I do through other channels.

Inspired by recent advances in flexible production tools and a dead stop in studio video production, I’ve had time to develop a couple projects focused on creating actual physical objects you can buy. The themes and techniques will shift from project to project but generally involve pop-art, agitprop, science fiction and fantasy imagery.

The first project, TestPatterns, is the result of a trip to Maui in 2006 where I discovered how much fellow geeks were happy to spend on aloha shirts and how interesting it would be to adapt imagery from science fiction, fantasy and other corners of the collective visual vocabulary of misfits into tiki and aloha patterns. Over time, the idea evolved to include more traditional patterns and layouts, making it possible to experiment with production without investing in bolts of fabric.

For this launch, the first four themes, CthuluHula, Golden Age, Sotto Voce and Underfoot Mandalas, work elements as varied as elder gods, vintage toys, Remington portable typewriter keys and manhole covers into 40 different designs available on everything from socks to duvet covers. In future releases, look for dancing robots, morse code hieroglyphs, vintage map elements, the inevitable bit of knotwork and who knows what else.

I started ZeitGeistalt, a German word I made up, when the shut-down started last year with the thought that if people were stuck at home, they might as well be able to get souvenirs from places they’ve never been.

From there, the idea expanded to include literary and pop culture references, dystopian snark and whatever else I can dig up.

What resulted are an ever-growing series of graphics for stickers, shirts, bags, mugs and other souvenirs from across the multiverse.

I’ll continue to develop these two lines and introduce new stuff based on the feedback I receive so please let me know what you think, what you bought, and why you now regret having so little impulse control on the form on this page. In return, I’ll keep you updated on everything new coming out from Aethervision and answer any other questions you may have.

At present, everything is available through the store I’ve built on Redbubble, but I plan on testing Society6 out as well and then see how working with Printful or Printify compare with sales going through a storefront on this site. The final goal is to work up to a Kickstarter based on what I learn here and expand to products like aloha shirts.
